SOUTH AUSTRALIA-MCLAREN VALE
Cured meats and tomato-based pasta dishes or roast spring lamb.
American and French oak, new and one year old
Cherry red with crimson hues.
Redolent of dark berry and ripe plums with peppery spicy oak notes.
Medium-bodied with lifted ripe plummy fruit, fresh dark berries with hints of spice. Firm yet fine tannins add structure, it is a wine that drinks well now and will do so for up to about five years of age.
For Pat and Vicki Vasarelli, the pairing of food and wine is as much of an art as their lively marriage. Having emigrated to Australia from central Italy they continue the Italian tradition of making spicy pork sausages, year-long cured prosciutto and strongly flavoured salted cod at their McLaren Vale home. The vineyard covers 40 acres and most of the root stocks are over 40 years old. Prior to establishing their own label, the Vasarellis sold their fruit to Wirra Wirra, Ryecroft and Orlando. Merlot has generally been planted in Australia with the intention of blending with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc to emulate the red wines of Bordeaux. In certain regions, however, the Australian climate produces Merlot with enough flavour to make a terrific wine on its own. The Vasarelli Vineyard, planted with 40-year-old vines, is one such spot, and this wine is a lovely example of the variety.
