The Alkoomi winery, which is located in the Frankland River wine region of Western Australia, lies approximately 80 kms inland from the Southern Ocean. The lovely name Alkoomi, which is taken from the local aboriginal dialect and means "the place we chose", was selected by the original owners when they acquired the land in the early 1900's. Originally farmed to grain, sheep and cattle, a downturn in the 1960s led Merv towards vineyards, a decision they have been glad they took as the Frankland River area is ideal for premium grape growing.Merv and Judy planted their first vines in 1971, on rolling hills at an altitude of about 360m. These consisted mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling but with some Shiraz and Malbec. Subsequent plantings during the 1980's and 1990's greatly increased the area under vine, with the result that Alkoomi now has one of the largest vineyards in Western Australia.
