"I wish to produce food friendly varieties at an affordable price, avoiding as much as possible high alcohol. I especially like Italian varieties which we can blend, as we like to produce interesting flavours and quirky blends. I want to stay ahead of the pack with new ideas."
- Stefano de Pieri
After working as a public servant for some years, I moved to Mildura and became a chef. In that career I reacquainted myself with wine which I had briefly studied in Italy. I ran a successful restaurant for many years, made television programmes at the very beginning of the television food revolution and received many awards for my work.
In addition to producing wines, I am also the new owner (with my wife Donna) of the Mildura Brewery where I am extending my understanding of craft beer.
Stefano's favourite wine moment
"Drinking flagons of Barolo at a friend’s place in Alba (Piedmont) whilst his mum was cooking traditional food of the area with mountains of truffles from their own property. It was what they naturally do there at their farm houses."
Stefano's winemaking philosophy
- Good fruit from my region to express varietal character.
- Blend opportunistically to get credible, interesting wines.
- Aim at a level of pleasant acidity so that the wine can successfully match various food types.
Stefano de Pieri's passion for the Mildura region in Victoria, combined with his love of food and wine, is well documented. Stefano de Pieri's wines are cheerful and uncomplicated. They are balanced and savoury. They are designed to match a variety of foods and to suit many occasions. Innovative, they are made with mostly ‘alternative’ varieties and are treated sympathetically: oak never dominates while alcohol levels are always moderate.
