Background:

John Jobbins arrived in Australia in 1816 on a ship called Fanny, having been transported for 7 years. After he earned his freedom he bought himself a butcher's shop, and invested all his profits in land. In fact, his portfolio of land became so wide that he was nicknamed 'Rich John Jobbins'. For a while there he was also called 'wicked rascal', but his land seemed to redeem him, because by the time he died he was known as a thoughtful and kind-hearted man. Jobbins' main residence was in the Parish of Murrumbateman, near Canberra, and the extensive landholdings he held are part of the rich, fertile area, which is now a newly emerging wine region.
