Colour:
Very pale in its youth, but we know from experience that New Zealand Pinot Gris will develop onion skins tints with age.
Nose:
Subtle, yet exotic. The nose shows delicate earthy undertones that typify both the variety and the soils at Hexton. Coupled with this are lovely spice and pear notes.
Palate:
Medium in body, with an exceptional balance between fruit sweetness and acidity. The finish is long, spicy and textural.
Background:
Our 2009 Riparian Pinot Gris is based on a single vineyard at the base of the Hexton Hills, just out of Gisborne city. Summer 2009 was very warm and settled in Gisborne and this allowed us to harvest the block in optimum condition. The fruit was juiced in Gisborne and then tankered to Auckland for vinification. Once the wine was dry, we left it sitting on its yeast lees for a period of time to allow its exotic aromas and flavours to develop. (Producer note)
