Background:
The story of Amberton typifies the adventurous spirit that helped found the Australian wine industry. In 1975 a group of wine-loving doctors who frequented a French restaurant in Sydneys Bondi Beach decided to make their own wine. In the spring of that year they planted a vineyard outside the small New South Wales town of Mudgee. An experimental vintage was produced in 1978, and the following year, the first commercial vintage was released. Encouraged by the results, the doctors proceeded with their plans to build a winery, and Amberton was born. The growth of Amberton has continued apace. In 1990 Amberton Wines moved production to a state-of-the-art winery in South Australias Barossa Valley. The focus on varietal styles - Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz (Syrah) - has remained unchanged but the grapes are now sourced from various premium vineyards across South Eastern Australia. Todays Amberton wines are a synergy of the latest in winemaking technology and high-quality varietal fruit. But at their heart, they still owe allegiance to a group of wine lovers gathered around a table sharing good food, good wine and good company.
