Wines from the Hawkes Bay Region

Hawkes Bay specialises in big Bordeaux-style reds based on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Syrah is also becoming popular, and Pinot Noir from selected higher-altitude vineyards is also managing to shine. Their Sauvignon Blanc is more restrained than Marlborough versions, and Chardonnay and Riesling, along with Viognier, Pinot Gris and Chenin Blanc, is also of a very high quality. Trinity Hill produces some unusual (for New Zealand) European reds like Tempranillo, Montepulciano and Touriga Nacional.
