Gisborne's main grapes are Chardonnay - it’s known as the Chardonnay capital, Gewurztraminer - it introduced the variety here, and more recently Merlot. You'll also find some Cabernet and a smattering of Riesling, Viognier and Pinot Noir. Chardonnay accounts for around 25% of the national crop, while Gisborne's overall production places it third behind Marlborough and Hawkes Bay. Because production is primarily for large producers however, you’ll find only a handful of independent Gisborne labels on the shelves.
