Although there are grapes grown in West Auckland most wineries source a large percentage of their crop from elsewhere. The region produces Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Over in Clevedon and South Auckland with the exception of Villa Maria most wineries produce only tiny volumes, but they feature diversity; some concentrate on St. Emilion-style reds while others produce Italian varieties like Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano, Arneis and Pinot Grigio. The Awhitu peninsula in Waiuku has experienced some growth recently headed by Awhitu Wines who produce locally-grown Syrah and Chardonnay.
